Write of Passage: Director of Content & Marketing

TLDR: We’re seeking a Director of Content & Marketing for Write of Passage. This position will touch every corner of the Write of Passage ecosystem, including setting the Write of Passage content strategy, creating course-related content, growing David Perell's audience, running course launches, and architecting our backend email infrastructure. You’ll take the lead in directing the Write of Passage brand across all channels, and you’ll be responsible for marketing new products that emerge. The role is highly flexible, fully remote, and asynchronous except for occasional trips within the U.S.

Mission

At Write of Passage, our mission is to teach thousands of people to write online, share their ideas, and build an online audience. In our flagship Write of Passage course, hundreds of students learn to publish their ideas, connect with others, and accelerate their careers through their writing. Students also leave with a network of friends who share their excitement for ideas.

Write of Passage has been taken by over 1,000 students in more than 50 countries. Over time we will continue to add companion courses to the Write of Passage ecosystem. Our vision is to build a global platform for writing instruction in the 21st century while delivering the best educational experience on the Internet.

What is the Director of Content & Marketing going to do?

  • Content strategy: Orchestrate a big-picture strategy for all Write of Passage content and marketing assets, leading to email subscribers and course sales
  • Course-related content. Create high-quality marketing content that positions Write of Passage as a premium brand in the education space. We want to build a reputation for quality similar to MasterClass
  • Brand overhaul: Guide the Write of Passage brand (copywriting, storytelling, aesthetics) in conjunction with a team of contractors to support you
  • Audience growth and engagement: Help grow Write of Passage by helping to grow David’s email list (followers, subscribers, members, customers) through organic and paid acquisition (ads, partnerships, affiliates, etc.) while increasing audience engagement
  • Marketing events. Plan, coordinate, and deliver virtual launch workshops to build momentum for course launches
  • Marketing emails. Design and execute email marketing sequences for Write of Passage course launches and future companion course launches 
  • Email system architecture. Build and maintain a reliable email system to power Write of Passage launches, companion course launches, and product launches
  • Testimonial content strategy: Create testimonials to showcase top Write of Passage students and alumni. Cross-promote these assets across channels and on the Write of Passage website 
  • Marketing analytics. Build systems to track success rate of marketing emails, launch workshops, and affiliate partners. Use analytics to track sales leads and purchase patterns


The role will be fast-paced and dynamic, split between running course launches and orchestrating the Write of Passage content strategy.

During course launches you’ll be responsible for designing the launch strategy. This will include planning launch email sequences, planning and running virtual workshops, and working with contractors to refine the Write of Passage website and launch email copy. Over time you’ll manage a growing team that executes all launch activities.  


Beyond course launches, you’ll set the content strategy to grow David’s email list and promote the Write of Passage brand. You’ll work with contractors to produce free written and video content to spread awareness about the course and grow our top-of-funnel subscriber base. You’ll also help repurpose existing content assets for new audiences and mediums.

  • You have excellent writing skills, with experience in content marketing, email funnels, and copywriting
  • You are meticulously organized and pay close attention to detail
  • You’re work strategically by setting thoughtful visions, planning deliberately, and executing thoroughly
  • You have experience building email funnels and tracking marketing data
  • You have experience planning and producing written and visual content for the Internet
  • You can work across mediums and channels, from writing to video to audio to virtual events
  • You have experience managing a small team, both in-house and contractors, to execute on long-term projects
  • You have experience managing both the creative and operational sides of email marketing and high-volume content production
  • You are comfortable wearing many hats in a wide-ranging role requiring rapid learning and openness to feedback
  • You are comfortable working on a small, bootstrapped team to flexibly and creatively solve problems as they arise
  • You are highly independent and self-directed, but also skilled at collaborating with a distributed, asynchronous team
  • You are located in the U.S. and can travel regularly (every 2-3 months) to the Austin area or other locations within the U.S. for team retreats and in-person collaboration
